In 1985, Xi Jinping was a county official from Zhengding in China’s Hebei Province, when he first visited the United States.

The future President Xi Jingping was then in his early 30’s, a member of a Chinese delegation studying agricultural and local governance practices.
More than 30 years later, his journey would take him to leadership of all of China, as head of the Central Government in Beijing.
But first: after San Francisco, he traveled to Muscatine, lowa as part of a delegation studying American agriculture.
These early experiences helped Xi Jinping to develop his lifelong affection for, and understanding of, the American people.
